The journey is long; a path marked by errors.
The mirror deceives me; it shows no imperfections.
The camera tells lies; it blurs out all my flaws.
The magazine tells no truth; it looks good, I have no faults.
The fault lines are obvious; I try to conceal them.
The headlines are dubious; they are never consistent.
How would they say I am not perfect?
A pure 10/10, the definition of excellence.
People look up to me; I must be standing on a ladder
Adamantium in my bones, yet conferred with much weakness
Looked upon as Superman, yet surrounded with Kryptonite
You thought I was perfect; I make mistakes
Daily I learn; failures become my lecturers
Yet I improve, and fail less often. The lessons have been learnt
All you see is perfection, few saw the lessons learnt
Perfection is a journey, filled with numerous mistakes.
Often, we see our stars and icons as heroes. We see their lives as perfect and we desire it; despising our own lives. We often say words like, “I wish I was as tall as he was”, “I wish I was as beautiful as she is” and much more. We see them as perfect and incapable of mistakes. Yet we forget that life is a journey and everything goes through due process. We see the beauty of the butterfly, we see all its radiance and colors, its grace as it flies through the air. We admire it and we are tempted to believe that this beautiful butterfly has been this way all along. Yet, we forget that this perfection we see now underwent a process; the butterfly was once a caterpillar. This caterpillar once ate up our crops and was greatly despised by farmers; today it is a beautiful butterfly. It is seen for its beauty; the past becomes a lesson (more like history). You may not look like it today my dear friend, do not give up. You may have made a lot of mistakes; see them as lessons. The beauty you seek is reserved for you, learn from your mistakes and become better. All people are interested in is who you have become. Your stories will inspire others, so share them. Always remember that perfection is a journey, filled with numerous mistakes.
A short video for the poem on perfection.
