Dear Child, oh precious child
What greatness lies in you, what great a deposit of riches.
How precious is your mind; crude in its state
Like a diamond uncut; like an unrefined barrel of crude
Yet of great value when developed.
Africa; the dark continent,
They describe your present; location.
A girl child; suited for the kitchen
That was their final conclusion
Having no father; what a tragedy
They look upon you in pity.
Less privileged, from a poor background
This was the label they placed on you.
Dear child, oh great child.
This does not define who you are
For in you lies a seed of greatness; Only a few can clearly see this
You are a king, you are a queen
Let hope rise within you like a fire that consumes all
Like cold water to a thirsty soul; Pure refreshment you bring
Like good news from a far country; So are you to your family
Like an icon who motivates others; you shall grow to be
Your background not withstanding; you shine as stars
Your location not withstanding; they shall seek for you
You are the leader of tomorrow; hold your head up high
Defeat is not the end; it is just another opportunity to fly
I believe in you
In victory you shall dance
Sorrow shall not be invited
An icon you shall be called
Your failures not remembered
An example you shall be; your background not withstanding
In glory you shall be decked, in beauty you shall shine
Dear Child, Oh precious Child
The world is waiting for your growth; so don’t give up on yourself.
