Five Ls of leadership. Part 2

In the previous post, we learnt about some L’s of leadership. We learnt about the L’s called Live, Lead and Learn. Today, I would drop the remaining L’s and they are called Love and Legacy. So, let’s get right to it.

Love: This L of leadership is at the center of it all. As a leader, you have to love what you do, you have to love the people you work with and you have to love those you serve. Without a love for what you do, the leadership ‘job’ would be a burden. Without love for the people you work with, tolerance would be almost impossible. Without love for the people you lead, you would not be motivated to do much for them. So without love, a leader would end up as a dictator.

To love effectively, we must start by loving ourselves. If a person cannot love himself or herself, that person cannot love others. When you love yourself, you would not compare yourself with others. When you love yourself, you would accept yourself for who you are and then you would see the potentials within you. You were not created without purpose, God designed you for great things. Comparing yourself with others is simply distracting yourself. Focus on the race God has set in front of you and be consistent in your assignment. When we love ourselves, then we can love others as much as we love ourselves. This way, we would lead effectively.

Legacy: This is the final L of Leadership in this post. It leaves the leader with questions such as, what would you be remembered for? Who would miss you when you’re gone? Are you really making an impact? Would those you lead feel your absence? These questions should be read carefully and answered truthfully.

I understood the importance of legacy when my dad died. He was a leader and I did not understand his level of impact until he left. So many people shared testimonies of how he touched their lives, and how he challenged them to pray more and study their bibles more. His teachings on investment, vision, family and spirituality changed a lot of their lives and so much more was said about him. These events changed my perspective on leadership and it formed these questions I previously asked. Take time to look at them and remember, “if your absence was not felt, your presence was not needed”.

Think on these L’s, take them personally and change your life. You are a leader in your field, go on and make a difference.
