Challenge the Status Quo

In a world that is often black and white. In a world where uniformity is seen as normal and the extraordinary is ostracized. Daring to be different is often seen as strange or weird. Starting something new or out of the box isn’t often welcomed. Phrases like “it has always been done this way”, “there isn’t another way”, “this is impossible” are usually the hallmarks of life. People pitch their tents at where others stopped and they do not dare to look for new lands. Those who try new things are often discouraged and those who dwell within the status quo are praised as heroes.

An experiment was once done with monkeys. A group of scientists placed 5 monkeys in a cage and in the middle, a ladder was placed with bananas on top. Every time a monkey went up the ladder, the scientists soaked the rest of the monkeys with cold water. After a while, every time a monkey went up the ladder, the others beat up the one on the ladder. After some time, no monkey dared to go up the ladder regardless of the temptation. The scientists then substituted one of the old monkeys and added a new monkey. The new monkey went straight for the banana at the top of the ladder. The other old monkeys beat up the new monkey until it learnt not to climb the ladder or reach for the banana. Then the scientists kept on replacing the old monkeys one by one with new ones, and the beating act was constantly repeated by both the old monkeys and the recently beaten new monkeys, each time a new monkey tries to reach for the banana. Finally, all the old monkeys were replaced with new monkeys. None of the new monkeys reached for the banana because they were scared of being beaten. Sadly, none of the new monkeys knew why they were beating themselves; yet none dare go for the banana.

Most times, we do not reach for opportunities because we fear what may happen. The truth is, people will cry you down whenever you challenge the norms. People will try to stop you when your dreams seem so big. Most of them do not know why they accept the status quo; they were taught to accept it. My charge to you today is, hold on to those extraordinary ideas. Hold on to your big dreams. God placed you in this world to solve problems, and to solve problems we must challenge the norms. Do not be like those monkeys in that experiment. Ask relevant questions and challenge the status quo.
