Are you prepared?

“If you want to stay under a shade tomorrow, plant a tree today”

Tomorrow is not really as far as we think; it’s just 24 hours away. The future isn’t miles away as we believe; it is just next door. Time is not as slow as we believe; time seems to be sprinting these days. For us to achieve the goals we have written down or planned, we must start today. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”, those words remain ever true even till today. If there is an aspect of your life you want to change, do not defer it till tomorrow, start working on it today.

At a point in my life, my life was in a really dark place. I was young and very foolish. My relationship with God was non-existent, my relationship with my family members had gone south, my academics were very poor and my life in general was heading for a ship wreck. My ship was heading for the rocks and I knew I had to do something about it. I needed a time of reflection, a moment in which I would decide to make my life better, well that time never came; not by my own planning. I had a reality check when I had the lowest academic result in my whole life, my family tried encouraging me but I knew I had messed up. I had missed it badly and my life was going off course. I locked myself in my room and began some reflective thinking. I had to first analyze the things that weren’t helping me and what aspects of my life I needed to change.

First of all, I dropped all my friends (I had some bad friends) and began a journey of self-discovery.  I had to understand who I was and what good I could offer to the world. To help me on my quest, I went for books. I read books on leadership, vision, wisdom, purpose and success. At a time, I read 52 books in one month. I was a monster who couldn’t be satisfied. In my quest, I found myself. I could see more clearly who God designed me to be. I understood the importance of God in my life and why I needed Him more than anything else.

I then started setting personal development goals. I started working on my fitness, my mental quickness, my spiritual growth, my writing skills and public speaking skills. My relationship with my family blossomed as my dad became my life mentor and bible study partner (the man read over a thousand books). My family members became my friends, my life was just changing greatly. As I grew, I attracted like-minded people who inspired me to reach for higher heights. My academics became sound and I started topping the class. My relationship with God grew greatly as He became my guide in the path of life. I got my life back and much more; based on a decision I made to change my life.

Do not get comfortable with the wrong stuff in your life. Get mad, take a radical step. Drop all those habits you do not need, drop those friends who aren’t pushing for something greater. Dimming your light isn’t a sign of modesty, but a disservice to others. As you shine, you motivate others to reach for greater heights.

So…...
  1. Run an analysis on your life and note areas you need to change.
  2. Take radical steps to improve your life (read books, watch educational videos, seek wise advice).
  3. Measure your progress; the growth may be slow, but you will definitely grow.
  4. Share your growth story; it will inspire others to do the same.

Do follow these short steps and prepare for the future. Never forget that “If you want to stay under a shade tomorrow, plant a tree today”. If you want to arrive at a glorious future tomorrow, start preparing for it today.
